Observability MCP servers

Grafana MCP covers several observability surfaces and Grafana resources; Prometheus MCP focuses on PromQL queries and metric discovery.

These servers have different jobs and permission boundaries. Each summary comes from the publisher’s documentation.

Server notes

Grafana MCP Server

Grafana’s MCP server connects an MCP client to a Grafana instance and its supported data sources and resources.

Best for
Observability workflows that need to query metrics and logs and inspect dashboards, alerts, incidents, or related Grafana resources.

Sources checked:

  • The server uses Grafana credentials, and each operation requires the corresponding Grafana RBAC permission and scope.
  • Some tools can create or update Grafana resources; grant least-privilege permissions and enable only needed tool groups.

Prometheus MCP Server

Prometheus MCP Server exposes PromQL queries and metric discovery through MCP tools.

Best for
Focused metric investigation against a Prometheus server, including instant or range queries and target inspection.

Sources checked:

Capabilities

  • Execute instant and range PromQL queries.
  • List metrics, retrieve metric metadata, and inspect scrape targets.

Access and use
